"Proper tattoo aftercare involves keeping the area clean, hydrated, and protected to ensure proper healing and prevent infection. Wash your new tattoo 1–3 times daily with unscented antibacterial soap, apply a thin layer of scent-free lotion or balm, and never pick or scratch it. Avoid submerging in water, direct sunlight, and tight clothing for 2–4 weeks.
Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)
Leave bandage on: Follow your artist’s advice, typically leaving the initial bandage or "second skin" on for 3 to 5 days.
First wash: Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap immediately after removing the bandage.
Pat dry: Use a clean paper towel to pat it dry, never a bath towel which can harbor bacteria.
Daily Maintenance (Weeks 1-3)
Cleanliness: Wash your hands before touching your tattoo and clean it 1–3 times daily.
Moisturize: Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion or approved tattoo balm to keep it from drying out, but do not clog pores.
Don't pick: Peeling or scabbing is normal, but picking at it can cause ink loss and scarring.
What to Avoid
Submersion: No swimming pools, hot tubs, or baths for at least 2–4 weeks.
Sun exposure: Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading and blistering.
Tight clothing: Wear loose, breathable, cotton clothing to avoid friction.
Intense exercise: Avoid heavy sweating for 2 weeks to prevent irritation.
When to Call a Professional
If you notice spreading redness, excessive heat, swelling, or yellow/green discharge, seek medical attention as these are signs of infection.
For long-term care, keep the tattoo moisturized and use high-SPF sunscreen to keep it looking vibrant.
